A power sander is a tool used to strip or deeply scour, in order to smooth very quickly and efficiently a large surface. There are many models available, each with a specific use and an efficiency particular to each. In this article, we will look at the primary use for each type of sander so that you might choose the most appropriate to the job you have to do.

Belt sander

It is used for removing a large amount of wood from a flat surface, plank, quickly. It is particularly effective if it is used with coarse sandpaper. Of course it can also be used to finish a piece of wood by using finer sandpaper. It probably the most common sander and it is widely available everywhere. A 500 W model would give you ample power for all your do it yourself projects. This type of tool can go through a piece of wood at incredible speed, so you should handle it very carefully.

Palm sander

This type of sander is better kept for smaller surfaces, and for jobs more in line with finishing, of course taking the coarsness of the sandpaper used. Most palm sanders are very easy to use, it is easy to change the sandpaper pads but are not very powerful, so they are perfect for sanding before applying a varnish or paint.

Orbital sander

Used almost exclusively for finishing and polishing. With a coarse abrasive, this sander tends to vibrate while resting on the surface to be sanded, it will not produce a very effective sanding. It is therefore better suited for the finer work of polishing or finishing a piece of wood.

A disk sander is primarily used for cleaning metals, like wrought iron or copper. It tends to leave circular marks, something that is frowned upon when working wood.

Narrow belt sander

It is a sander with a very narrow band that allow sanding in grooves and small places. You can even out notches you might have made with a chisel, or use it to sand curved pieces. Considering its small size it is not possible to use it on large surfaces. It is better to keep it to finishing work.
