Do you want to replace your old and worn out glider cushions without spending a lot? If so, then you should consider making your own. Creating replacement cushions for your glider chair is a straight forward task that can be easily accomplished with a little know-how.
To help you carry out the project properly, here is a step-by-step guide.
First of all, it is important to decide up front how many cushions you will be making. Of course, you have to remove the old cushions on your glider chair. Next, measure the length, width, and depth of the glider chair to ensure that the cushions will fit perfectly. Once done, you have to gather all the needed materials, which will most likely include the following:
- Upholstery foam (about 4 to 6 inches thick)
- Cotton batting
- Fabric (choose the pattern that suits your taste and will complement well with the glider chair)
- Spray adhesive
- Water proofing fabric spray
- Measuring tape, scissor, and utility knife
- Sewing machine, pins, needle, and thread
After preparing the materials, you should begin cutting the upholstery foam according to the measurements you have acquired earlier. Next, get the cotton batting and lay it on top of the upholstery foam. Securely attach the cotton batting to the foam with the use of the spray adhesive.
When done, fold your fabric facing down on a flat surface from side to side, and then put the upholstery foam on top of it. With the use of a scissor, cut the fabric but be sure to leave a 2-inch allowance on the sides.
Again, lay the foam on top of the long side of the folded fabric and then trace it using the pencil, or a fabric chalk. Make sure to do the same with the short edges of the fabric. Cut the traced sides and do not forget to leave a 2-inch seam allowance. Pin the cut fabric together with the help of the pins, and then sew them together pieces by pieces. Be sure to properly sew the corner seams on all sides. After that, sew the long side fabric piece as well as the short end pieces unto the fabric. By now, you should already have an empty box-shaped cushion cover with an opening.
Carefully slide the upholstery foam unto the opening and then closed it with the use of a needle and thread. Follow the same procedure with the other replacement glider cushions that you will make. You may also attach ribbons to the cushions’ corners so you can conveniently tie them around the glider chair. These tips will also work for making other types of cushions as well. So whether you are looking to make stool cushions, glider cushions, or some other type, following this step-by-step guide should make the whole process much easier!
