Some things are better left untouched, but for these little things, though, a simple makeover could turn your room, from drag to fab!

I am not talking about my Kingsdown mattress, but what I am talking about is the thing we all take for granted, that something that we just step on for so many times that we don’t even notice it anymore. Yes, it’s the door mat.

Needless to say, door mats may just be there to serve as a cleaning utility, to welcome guest’s shoes, but it could make your room. Ever heard of personalized door mat? Using some artistry, you can change a boring mat into a fashion statement. Imagine a doormat in your front door, with your family name stitched with your dog’s paw drawn? Or how about your company logo, if you intend to decorate your office door mat. You can mix colours making sure it blends well with the room. You can also use different textiles cut up from used clothing. You can easily patch these all together without being an expert in sewing machine.

You can go on a theme for a specific occasion, like stitching snowman or Santa’s reindeers for the Christmas holidays, or some Easter bunny and eggs on Easter Sundays. What more, you can have a special someone’s name sewn up as a birthday gift for them.

Here are some easy instructions on how to make a personalized doormat using simple materials found anywhere.

You will need the following materials to create a decorative door mat:

A fiber blank mat choose any color, shape, and size you like. You might also select one with a ready made border to which you can simply add your own welcome message, or your name.

Alphabet stencils, stencil paint brushes, and any stencil design you want.

Fabric water proof paint, masking tape, sharpie marker, and scissors.

To proceed:

Work in a well ventilated area where you are comfortable doing this type of paint work.

Tape your stencils to the edges of the mat, trace your message using the alphabet stencils and a sharpie marker. Once your message is in place finalize your design. Let the marker lines dry and set into the mat before you begin the painting process.

Paint your message and designs using fabric paint colors that will make it stand out and show your personality, but use only a small amount of paint at a time, or you run the risk of paint bleeding past the stencils lines. Remember that fibers are porous and absorb liquids by capillary action. Let your new personalized door mat dry at least 24 hours before setting it out where people will step on it.

As you can see it is easy to make a personalized door mat. Now that you have the idea you might consider making some for family members gifts, using themes with their hobby or special interests, you can also make some for children's room.
